I had started flying back to the house when I saw four men headed for the greenhouse. Two of them were carrying a rolled-up Persian rug that sagged suspiciously in the middle. Bradley wasn't among the troupe, but Rodriguez was. And so was my Fitz. Mike Fitz and Green Day, aka Jimbo, completed my head count. They pushed open the door to the greenhouse and it banged loudly against something. Rodriguez was clearly in charge. I couldn't see through the glass panes, which were fogged over with moisture, so I landed behind the building, hoping to be able to find an opening to peer through.

I saw a sliver of light coming through a cracked pane and put my eye to it. Rodriguez was telling the two Fitzes to unfold a tarp they took out of a cabinet. It was one of those ubiquitous blue ones they sell at every Home Depot. "Line it with rocks," he was saying.

"Where the hell are we going to get rocks?" my Fitz mouthed off. His movements were stiff and his face rigid with anger.

"Over there, stacked by the shelves. Those are bags of river rocks, used around the shrubs. Bring the bags over. Don't open them."

The two Fitzes went over and brought back a bag apiece. "These weigh sixty pounds each," Fitz said flatly. "That should hold her down. Any more might bust through the tarp. Besides it's going to be damned heavy to carry."

"We'll leave her in the rug," Rodriguez said coldly. "Get it."

Fitz gave Jimbo a look thick with disgust. "You pick her up. You did this, you son of a bitch."

"I told you it was an accident," Jimbo whined. "I was just fooling around."

"Fooling around? You sick fuck. You broke her neck." Fitz's words were filled with loathing.

"She was nothing but a whore," Jimbo shot back, his whining gone. "She deserved it. And nobody's gonna even know."

"I know. Mike knows. Rodriguez knows. Even Bradley—" Fitz said.

"That's enough." Rodriguez cut him off. "Let's just get this over with. Get her on the tarp. Mike, help him. Saint Fitz, you go get the SUV."

Fitz stomped out and I heard the door slam behind him. Gravel crunched beneath his feet as he walked toward the house. Under his breath I could hear him saying, "Fuck fuck fuck."

I continued to watch what was going on through the crack in a pane of steamed-up glass. Rodriguez was telling Jimbo and Mike to wrap the tarp around the girl in the rug and use bungee cords to hold it. By the time they finished, the sound of a vehicle was getting closer.

Fitz came back in the door. "Now what?" he said.

Rodriguez turned to him. "Take her down to the boat and dump her in the Atlantic. It's not rocket science. I thought you were supposed to be the smart one. Now get her out of here. I'm going back to the house." He exited, leaving the other three to carry the body in the tarp out of the greenhouse.
